Mark Timlin's latest, is the sixteenth to feature south London hardman, Nick Sharman, and definitely one of his best. Kicking off with Timlin's take on the classic love-story, it quickly develops into a typically brutal revenge novel in which Sharman again proves himself meaner than all-comers. Once we get past the soppy stuff (which in Timlin's rugged hands never gets that soppy), we're back in familiar territory, accompanied by bent briefs, woman-beating armed robbers and a crazed knifer. Not for grandma, unless you think she should shake up her ideas.

Violence and sudden death come as easily to Nick Sharman, Mark Timlin's south London private eye in All the Empty Places, the 16th excursion of the laconic detective among our home-grown mean streets. It begins when Sharman falls for a a girl with a shady past, but then the path of true love has never been easy for the loveable rogue, and soon he is tangled up in a multi-million pound robbery, heavy-duty thugs and enough ordnance to stock the Woolwich Arsenal. The plot races along like a salsa dancer overdosing on red peppers and never lets go until the final bullet. A guilty pleasure.
