Pam Smith has died after a long struggle with cancer at the cruelly early
age of 45.
Pam started out as a primary school teacher before moving on to work for
Polygon, where she promoted Ian Rankin's first novel - The Flood. For many
years she worked with Mainstream selling their books in London, all the
time desperately trying to keep "The Boys" in check before finally being
the entire No Exit publicity and marketing machine and dealing with
authors such as Sparkle Hayter and Eddie Bunker, who became firm friends
and also did what they were told! At the same time Pam was also building
up a fledgling Literary Agency with crime authors such as Jerry Raine.
Pam was a lover of books but also films and many forms of music and could
sing very well. More recently she had developed her long term interest in
complementary medicine and alternative healthcare into another career in
Holistic massage and Reiki healing.
Pam had a great sense of humour, she was a tremendous and persistent rep,
a great PR and a wonderfully loyal, long term friend to many in and
outside the booktrade. In the words of Ian Rankin - "Pam was one of life's
true originals, sparky, vivacious and memorable."
She is survived by her father and will be greatly missed.
Pam Smith - Born Valentine's Day 1955, Died Easter Monday 2000
